Staying Ahead: Mark’s Story of Early Detection, Recovery, and Peace of Mind.
Mark has always embraced innovation. After building a decades-long career in computer science, from startups to Google, he spent his life looking toward the future. Today, in retirement, that same proactive mindset shapes how he approaches his health.
A husband, father, and lifelong learner, Mark grew up in Minnesota, attended school in Hawaii, and has called California home for more than 40 years. He stays active playing tennis and pickleball almost every day, lifting weights, traveling, and keeping a close eye on advancements in technology and AI.
When it came to cancer, however, Mark never expected that feeling healthy would still lead to a diagnosis.
A Preventative Scan That Changed Everything.
Mark wasn’t experiencing any major symptoms. Looking back on it, he recalls some difficulty swallowing, but didn’t think anything of it at the time. But after undergoing a proactive CT scan, doctors discovered a small nodule on his tongue. He was referred to an ENT specialist, who diagnosed him with throat cancer. Because it was caught early, Mark and his ENT were able to move quickly with immediate treatment.
In March 2024, before surgery, Mark was introduced to NavDx® testing by his surgeon. The test detected HPV-related cancer ahead of treatment.
On April 3rd, Mark underwent surgery, and afterward he received encouraging news: the cancer appeared to be gone. To ensure every remaining cancer cell was addressed, he completed six weeks of radiation therapy.
Finding Confidence Through Surveillance.
Following treatment, Mark began receiving NavDx testing every three months to monitor for any potential recurrence.
At first, waiting for the results was nerve-racking. “The first few times, you’re definitely uptight waiting to hear if the results are good or bad,” he shared. Over time, however, the testing process became something entirely different: reassurance.
Today, Mark has no evidence of disease, and his regular testing provides peace of mind rather than anxiety.
One aspect of the process that especially stood out to Mark was the convenience of NavDx-Arranged Phlebotomy. The testing kit is shipped directly to his home, and a phlebotomist contacts him to schedule a quick blood draw at his home.
Moving Forward and Giving Back.
Throughout his journey, Mark credits his support system for helping him navigate treatment and recovery. He’s especially grateful to his surgeon, Dr. Haidar, and to his friend, fellow tennis player, and fellow cancer survivor, Larry Fine, who had gone through the same journey a couple years prior and served as his mentor.
Having benefited from others sharing their experiences, Mark now hopes his own story can help someone else.
Today, Mark remains focused on the future. He continues to stay active, prioritizes his health, and looks forward to more travel.
For Mark, early detection, proactive care, and ongoing monitoring have helped turn a shocking diagnosis into confidence in moving forward.
